Managing your money

Downs-M

Jeff Guise

Managing Director, Chief Investment Officer

"Clients can be confident that we continually strive to add value to their investment portfolios by implementing our tactical asset allocation process."

Our investment philosophy is simple. We are an outcome-oriented firm and our goal is to provide you with a customized solution that will meet your investment needs and goals. In order to accomplish this, our process combines three stages: a thorough understanding of your objectives, long-term/strategic asset allocation, and short-term/tactical asset class and individual security considerations.

Our process has a history of uncovering opportunities in capital markets and implementing them in a timely manner.

Overall portfolio strategy is determined by our asset allocation team, led by the firm's chief investment officer. One of our central tenets of investing is diversification of asset classes across style and geography. By combining style-specific products we will be able to create an appropriate portfolio to meet your desired outcomes.

We believe the best outcomes are achieved through specialization and focus. For this reason, independent affiliate teams manage each asset class adhering to their own focused investment process, ensuring consistency over time and diversification by region, style and sector.

Asset allocation

After taking time to listen and develop a thorough understanding of your objectives, we look to capital markets to guide us to best satisfy them. We formulate a long-term expected return forecast for each asset class, the associated volatility and liquidity characteristics of each asset class and how the performance of each asset class interacts with one another.

Through our analysis we shall understand how best to allocate your capital and a strategic portfolio is then created that maximizes expected returns within your tolerance for volatility. The result of this process is a strategic portfolio allocation from which tactical asset mix changes are implemented.

Tactical portfolio management

The objective of our tactical process is to increase returns through tactically managing each portfolio. It is centered on the belief that short-term relative asset price changes are determined by economic growth expectations. Further, price trends show predictable performance patterns depending on the phase of the business cycle.

Our research focuses on identifying points when the economic growth momentum changes, which we believe lead to changes in asset pricing over a 12 month period. This research is used to determine forecasts for relative prices across a range of available asset classes.
